Ways Into the World

Moments From Foundry, Volume I is a collection of short fiction set across the Forged Lands. These stories are not arranged as a single continuous plot, and they are not required reading for the setting. Each one can be seen as a window into the world: a household, a ritual, a craft lesson, a political decision, a strange place, a quiet grief, or a moment where ordinary life presses against something larger.

You can read the collection in order, or begin wherever a title catches your attention. The chapters are presented in release order, but for readers looking for a path in, the groupings below may help.

For quiet grief and aftermath

Returning Home to Rest follows a return to a coastal home where survival, repair and rest are all quieter than triumph.

Keeping the Hearth is a companion piece to the above and follows work, grief and repair in the Wolfsmaw Sound, where a leaking roof and a damaged net become part of learning what remains.

What Remains follows an Ossrajin Bone-Eater called to read the remains of a man whose people have already given him the wrong ending.

Properly centers on love, regret, and the difference between naming a life and making it real.

For horror and the uncanny

Nothing Like Any of Them follows a small party investigating a fresh starmetal impact site in the rain.

Beneath the Deepwood follows a scholar being guided through the Dark beneath the Deepwood, where curiosity is not always harmless.

The Eighth Mark follows a small wrongness in a measuring weight and the quiet terror of noticing what the world refuses to keep wrong.

For culture, craft and daily life

Whitefire Waystaff follows an Iskarn father and son shaping a tool meant to answer snow, stone, and hollow ice.

Heatball offers a glimpse of children at play in the Exile's Oasis, where interstice and normal life often share the same terrace.

A Wedding at Point Grey follows a coastal wedding in the Orotheon League, where ceremony and local wildlife refuse to keep separate.

For politics, consequence and history

For One Hour follows dwarven Empress Tatiana Kharkiv in a rare private hour, facing the machinery of empire without the comfort of clean choices.

The Weight of Slower Stone reflects on what was lost when the Zakhar Republic's old systems were replaced by imperial order.

Seven Banners captures a Bayani moment of omen, grief and collective decision in the aftermath of Varosk.

Dark Water follows a moment of violence in the Wolfsmaw Sound, and the powerlessness that will later become something harder.

For myth, place and wonder

Crossing the Cairn follows a visitor who misunderstands what the Cairn of Two Souls asks of those who approach it.

Dream Beneath the Trees follows a Realmwarden whose childhood encounter with the Wildspring has never fully ended.

Aether, Spanned follows a moment of invention at the edge of what existing magical theory can safely name.

These stories are meant to be read as moments rather than explanations. The lore of Foundry exists around them; the people inside do not live as entries in an encyclopedia. They mend roofs, weigh stone, cross rivers, raise children, make tools, misjudge the dead, and sometimes stand too close to things they do not understand.

Start anywhere. The world will meet you there. And thank you for reading!
