Epilogue

The sun rose over the village. It blanketed the land in a heavenly glow and warmth that rivaled no other. Juxtaposed upon the awful night of blood rain and a destroyed city, it was beautiful and welcoming. Ember sat on the porch of her new home, watching the sun as it meandered above the horizon. She thought on everything she had gone through in the last year. She was a noble, of great breeding and good standing. Now, everything had been pulled out from under her. She now found herself in a strange backwaters town full of strangers. Drake opened the front door, and stepped outside with a plate of sausages and eggs. “Breakfast,” he said, pushing the plate into her lap. The sausages were burnt, and the eggs soggy. “Sorry, I don’t claim to be a cook.”

“Thought you were one of the most powerful magic users in the world,” Ember scoffed. “You can’t cook a good breakfast?”

“Forgive me for not using my own soul to make a plate of sausage and eggs!” Drake said, annoyed. He sat down next to her and looked at the sunrise with her. For a moment they regarded it together. It became too awkward. There was just too much history between the both of them. She had killed his brother, dismantled his empire. He killed the last God, etcetera. “Listen,” Drake finally said. “Allura… She's a Goddess now. She hasn’t gone away. Things might get… well, really bad soon…” Drake trailed off. “Well, and I’ve killed Gods before… perhaps…” Drake hoped that Ember would put both of the ideas together.

“Mm,” Ember said, setting the plate aside. “You’re on your own, Drake Evanteus. I am afraid I have to go away for a while.” Drake didn’t answer at first, and then scoffed and stood up.

“Fine,” he spat out. “While you go pining for some dead lover, I’ll be doing my best to save the world from flooding with blood, or drowning in cum, or whatever other twisted machinations Allura as an all powerful immortal Goddess can come up with!” Drake shook his head and stormed off, descending the stairs and walking off into town. Ember sat back and continued to stare at the sunrise. She breathed in deeply, and sighed. She would do better next time, she had to. She would live a better life. A life with less violence, with less catastrophic failure. And most importantly, with more love.

Ember fingered the tip of a sharp dagger, watching as the sun rose into the sky. It was a beautiful day. One of the most wonderful and pretty sunrises she had ever seen. She didn’t even know if she had seen many in her time. She spent so much time worrying about the city and her nobility that the thought rarely crossed her mind. But now, she could bask in the glow of the eternal sun. The dagger cut her fingertip, and she didn’t even wince. She felt the pain, the blood running down her finger, and she was happy.

What a lovely day to end her life.
