At the age of twelve Porcelana is chosen to go live at the Convento do Pano Vermelho, the Convent of the Red Cloth, despite the objections of the Abbess, who declares she has the look of a traitor because she was born albino. Porcelana is trained to be an elite warrior to help protect her isolated town from the savage wolves that hide deep in the forest. It is on her first hunt that she learns the disturbing secret the convent has been hiding since its inception: that the wolves are Lupines, humans that can change to wolf form and back at will.
Unable to bring herself to kill the Lupine girl, Cátia, and her gravely wounded sister, Isidora, Porcelana decides to help them instead. The initial avid dislike between Cátia and she soon gives way to friendship then becomes something more. Together they learn the forgotten past of their people and the true cause behind their conflict.
Unbeknownst to them a betrayal has revealed Porcelana’s treachery to the Abbess who will stop at nothing to destroy the Lupines. Porcelana is determined to use the Abbess’s own lies and hypocrisy against her to save the life of the girl she loves . . . even if it means sacrificing her own in the process.
